THE BASICS
The Middle Ages was the era between the Iron Age and the Renaissance. It occurred all over Europe and the Middle east. Around 476 A.D, the fall of the Roman Empire triggered the beginning of this era. It ended around 1453. The era was split into three parts: the early, high and late Middle Ages.
DISCOVERIES AND TORTURE
The use of torture tactics became common during the Middle Ages. The most popular types begin the Scavenger's Daughter and the Iron Maiden. Torture was used to punish or seek revenge. The furnace was invented which was a huge step towards what we have today. Religion could be called a "discovery" as Islam and Christianity, the world's two largest religions, came about during this time period.
LIFE DURING THE MIDDLE AGES
Life during the Middle Ages was not that bad, aside from the extremely common torture tactics and plague that killed thousands. The people lived very differently, depending on the social class of the person. People were divided among the feudal system, where the grunt work was done by poor peasants who would live on a lord's land that was guarded by the lord's knights. These lords would, in turn, serve greater lords called vassals. Lords and ladies would wear clothes made of silk and cotton while peasants would wear leather and fur. Women had the the job of housekeeping, though their day would involve a lot more leisure time if they were upper class. Men would work and provide for the family. Trading in the Middle Ages involved the trade of spices, linen, paper, pearls, and silk. Entertainment was common with the most usual form being troubadours. Castles served the purpose of being homes as well as keeping invaders out during wars. It was during this era that the plague, which came from fleas on rats, started. Religious police called the flagellants developed. This group would punish the infected or "sinners" because they believed that god was using the plague to punish them. The plague decimated the peasant population and no one wanted to stay in a lords village so as not to get infected. The lord's unwillingness to let their workers leave later caused the peasants to revolt.
RELIGION
Religion ruled all in the Middle Ages. There were only two recognized religions in the Middle Age: Islam and Christianity. No matter what social class you were in, your life was dominated by the church. One had very little opinion in any matter without being judged by others. Unfortunately, due to the large lack of cooperation or tolerance between the religions, the crusades began. The Crusades were a series of holy wars that raged throughout the Middle East. The purpose of the Crusades was to take back Christian cities that were controlled by the Muslims. There were eight crusades in total, but only four were considered major, due to the large lack of fighting and change caused by the other four.
GOVERNMENT
The government and the land were ruled by a group of lords, religious leaders, and a King. Almost the whole of the Middle Ages was a theocracy. God was the true ruler of the Earth and the King was only there to veto what he saw fit and make sure people followed God's rules. The most important leaders of the time included King Robert, El Cid, Peter the Hermit, William Tel, and Thomas Aquinas. They were all important because they played pivotal roles in a Crusade, showed extreme bravery, or were very wise.
